BECOMING A DESIGNER

I am a new mommy, a designer, a dreamer, and a lover of all things creative. This blog is full of real life, real experiences, real projects, and all the emotions that come with it. Design is the main engine to this blog, but be warned if you follow along you will certainly read about a lot more than just design.

BECOMING A DESIGNER (INCASE YOU’RE INTERESTED)

How this all came about: My love for design started with a love for home. Growing up I moved somewhere around nine times and lived in six different states. In that process my family would house hunt (at least I always felt apart of the process) like crazy and then just decide that nothing fit and we would build, or finish out a home that was already started. Watching my mom and dad thumb through blue prints was fascinating to me. Over hearing the conversations and feeling important with my own opinions; I fell in love with the whole process.

Becoming the designer I am today: I was one of those that knew exactly what I wanted to study before I went to college and then stuck with it all the way through. I have a Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University in Interior Design. During college I had an internship with Christi Proctor off TLC’s trading spaces. I loved what I learned from her. She is so whimsical and always dreaming. That was my first taste of design in the work world and it was a good one for sure. The following summer I had an internship at Komatsu Architecture where I learned (more than I ever wanted to learn) about organizing plans, editing plans using AutoCAD, job binders, and all things technical. There was nothing colorful about this experience, but it was crucial to my attention to detail as well as applying all I had been learning in AutoCAD. I graduated from Baylor in 2011 and started working immediately for Chip and Joanna Gaines at Magnolia Homes. They also just landed a TV show with HGTV called Fixer Upper. You should watch it  – they have more talent in their pinky fingers that most have their whole lives. Needless to say not only did I fall in love with their precious family, I learned more than I can even begin to type in this box. I learned about design, business, finances, sub contractors (probably more than I wanted to know), construction, and how to have fun in the midst of it all. The past year and a half I have been working with a remodeling company here in Friendswood, Texas called Harris Remodeling. I love design, and I am used to being in construction. With my education and experience combined we (my husband and I) decided it was time to start our own company. Although we are young, we feel like we’ve been on the fast track when it comes to learning and running businesses.
